Preface
Finally I’m back again! A blast of heat welcomes me as I leave the aircraft at Luqa, Malta’s international airport. I know that in only a few hours I can start the first dive in the crystal water of the Maltese Archipelago. As usual, there is a taxi driver waiting to pick me up - is it the same guy as last time? He will drive me to Cirkewwa harbour where I will board a ferry to Gozo a small neighbouring island of Malta. When discussing my holiday plans nobody seems to have heard of this idyllic island. However, Gozo is meanwhile becoming well known as an insider tip among divers.
Although not as colourful as the Red Sea, and perhaps not as rich in species as other parts of the Mediterranean, Gozo’s underwater landscape is spectacular and the waters surrounding the island are of the most beautiful blue that I have ever seen. Gozo has a number of scenic dive sites that lie closely together, far away from the bustling tourism, which is ever present on the main island. Hopefully it will remain this way.
I'm happy to leave the noisy main island and to finally board the ferry for the half-hour crossing to Mgarr, Gozo’s main harbour. The ferry has completed this journey thousands of times over the years and despite her appearance I'm sure she will make it again! It isn't just the diving that fascinates me but also the solitude of Gozo's open landscape.
There are ten dive shops operating on the island that adequately cater for all diving requirements, with various packages and offers. Gozo is a popular and cheap holiday destination, in particular for experienced divers that wish to dive independently. Using rental cars and dive tanks, one can dive almost everywhere. Early morning or midnight dives are no problem for those divers who know the location. The aim of this guide is giving the reader the information necessary for these dives. I hope that the following explanations will help you to discover Gozo so that on your next visit you, too, will think: "Finally I’m back again"!
Enjoy your stay on Gozo
